San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie has launched a new police task force aimed at revitalizing downtown's economy and enhancing safety. The 'hospitality zone' initiative promises increased police presence in critical areas such as Union Square and the Moscone Convention Center. This dedicated unit will operate continuously and includes officers specifically assigned to these high-traffic regions to improve response and coordination. The city's leaders expressed optimism that these changes will focus on prevention rather than reaction to crime, aiming to restore downtown to its former vibrancy.
It's really hard when you're going from call to call to concentrate on problems. This effort will allow our officers to have the time they need to actually prevent problems from becoming problems.
This was the face of our city. Downtown is a place that we can all admit is not what it used to be.
