Poll: North Bay less supportive' of transportation tax in region
Briefly

A recent poll indicated marginal support for a proposed regional transportation tax in the Bay Area, with significantly weaker backing from areas north of the Golden Gate. The survey, conducted for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, assessed three tax frameworks aimed at preventing financial collapse of transit agencies ahead of the 2026 election. The most viable framework involves a half-cent sales tax and parcel tax lasting 30 years, though it garnered only 44% support in the North Bay. Concerns over the measure's viability were raised during discussions, emphasizing the challenges ahead given regional support disparities.
The North Bay has shown lower support for proposed regional transportation taxes, with only 44% in favor of a hybrid tax format despite 64% acknowledging funding need.
The survey indicates that with a half-cent sales tax plus a parcel tax lasting 30 years, only one tax framework allows participation from nine Bay Area counties.
Pat Eklund questioned the chances of passing the transportation measure if the North Bay participates, highlighting region-specific support disparities that could affect outcomes.
We're hesitant to say at this point it will win or lose, but certainly we're seeing lower support in the North Bay, says Ruth Bernstein.
