A federal judge in San Francisco ruled that mass firings of probationary employees by the Trump administration are likely illegal. The ruling grants temporary relief to labor unions challenging these terminations. Judge Alsup stated the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) had no authority over the hiring or firing of probationary employees from federal agencies like the Department of Defense. The ruling comes amid ongoing lawsuits aimed at stopping the administration's attempts to reduce the federal workforce, with many claiming firings were unjust and based on false performance evaluations.
"OPM does not have any authority whatsoever, under any statute in the history of the universe," to hire or fire any employees but its own, he said.
The plaintiffs say the Office of Personnel Management had no authority to terminate the jobs of probationary workers who generally have less than a year on the job.
