Texas State Rep. Stan Gerdes (R) acknowledged during a legislative hearing that he lacks evidence for his previous claims about schools offering litter boxes to students identifying as cats. Despite his introduction of a bill aimed at banning 'furries' in classrooms based on these unfounded allegations, Gerdes could not cite any valid instances when pressed by fellow representative James Talarico. Talarico further highlighted the harmful implications of legislators acting on debunked conspiracy theories, pointing out that Texas Governor Greg Abbott made similar unverified claims to support the bill.
I find it concerning that these types of debunked conspiracy theories are being used by politicians at the highest levels of our government, including in this legislature, who know that they're incorrect.
Can you name a school where it has been confirmed that there are litter boxes being provided to students? Gerdes conceded, For this purpose? No, I cannot.
