The California High-Speed Rail Authority board recently expressed significant worries about the project's financial future amid pending federal support from the Trump administration. Board members, led by James Ghielmetti and Martha Escutia, emphasized the necessity of a solid financial plan, especially given the possible loss of funding from the Department of Transportation. They discussed the implications of proceeding with contracts if funding remains uncertain, stressing the importance of fiscal responsibility to avoid delaying the project further. The board continues to approve contracts for upcoming construction despite financial concerns and administrative reviews.
"I'm very nervous about receiving the federal funding," Ghielmetti said. "I want to make sure my fellow board members are aware that if the federal money does not come through, somebody's got to backstop these contracts."
"We are obviously in trouble," she said. "A financial plan needs to be cemented as the board continues to vote on how money will be spent."
