CAL FIRE is revising wildfire risk maps for the Bay Area for the first time in over a decade, impacting homeowners significantly. The assessment has identified nearly 7,600 acres in Sonoma County as high-risk, while parts of Oakland have seen a reduction in risk designation. Homeowners in very high-risk areas must adhere to new fire safety regulations, such as clearing flammable items near their homes. Local governments will have a few months to evaluate these changes before final approval.
The new fire lines will mean major changes for homeowners, as areas now considered 'very high risk' will have to clear out all flammable items within five feet of homes.
This is the first time in more than a decade that CAL FIRE has assessed fire danger in cities across the Bay Area, marking significant updates in wildfire risk evaluation.
