A chaotic scene unfolded at a residential building at the edge of the Tenderloin in San Francisco on Monday morning, leading to a citywide alert. A fire had broken out on the fourth floor earlier that morning, and police responded after a person threatened others while wielding a machete. The suspect, Jared Spegal, barricaded himself for hours but was later taken into custody without incident and transported to a hospital for evaluation. The fire situation occurred around 3 am, with police responding at 6:43 am to reports of a person threatening others while waving a machete.
The suspect, 47-year-old Jared Spegal, barricaded himself inside his apartment for several hours before being safely rescued by the fire department.
Spegal was taken into custody without incident and transported to a local hospital for evaluation, while two residents suffered minor injuries from the fire.
