Nine young adults have successfully transitioned from the foster care system to their new apartments in downtown San Jose, thanks to a partnership between the nonprofit First Place for Youth and First Community Housing. Gisell Duran, one of the beneficiaries, expressed her optimism and independence, viewing her new apartment as a vital step towards a brighter future. The program addresses the needs of foster youth, particularly in areas like Santa Clara County, where there's a lack of specialized housing and support services for those aging out of care, emphasizing the need for greater visibility on this issue.
I was worried about housing. I just felt like I outgrew the living with roommate situation... This whole transition has been so smooth and yeah I just feel really good.
There's foster youth everywhere around us we just don't know. It's one of the most invisible issues that we need to make more visible.
For someone to be in foster care after age 18 that means a lot of things did not line up perfectly for them.
This is a launching pad into her future.
