Miami-Dade County Commissioner Keon Hardemon has passed legislation to freeze funding for Circle of Brotherhood and Neighbors and Neighbors Association. This unexpected decision came after Hardemon reported feeling threatened by supporters of the nonprofits during a funding request meeting, equating their actions to 'gang activity.' The Circle of Brotherhood aims to combat gun violence and poverty, while Neighbors and Neighbors Association supports local businesses. Despite calls for increased funding, the commission opted to suspend existing grants until a report from Mayor Daniella Levine Cava's office.
When I saw some of the activity that was rolling in front of this dais, I recognized gang activity. What should we do to organizations that take the time to threaten elected leaders in our community?
The Circle of Brotherhood is an organization of mostly Black men with a stated mission of addressing community problems, including gun violence and poverty.
