SoCal man who killed wife and tossed her severed legs in trash gets 15 years to life in prison
Briefly

Jack Potter, 72, was sentenced to 15 years to life for the second-degree murder of his wife, Laurie Potter, whose body parts remained unidentified for nearly two decades. Prosecutors revealed that Potter not only smothered Laurie, 54, in February but also lived lavishly by fraudulently using her identity, even dating a woman with the same name. A breakthrough in the cold case came in 2020 through advanced DNA techniques that ultimately led detectives to Laurie's son, confirming her identity and establishing Potter’s guilt.
For almost 20 years, Potter was living large and profiting off of Laurie's death while pretending she was still alive. He fraudulently opened credit cards in her name.
Potter expressed remorse during his hearing, apologizing and saying he loved his wife: 'I let my emotions get the better of me that one time. I don't know why.'
