SJ fire department reconsidering drug storage after audit reveals tampering, theft
Briefly

The arrest of San Jose Fire Captain Mark Moalem for drug theft has triggered a review of drug storage protocols within the fire department. Chief Robert Sapien noted the emotional impact of such actions on the department. An audit revealed potential drug tampering in half of the department's stations. To combat this, the department plans to enhance security measures, including new technologies for tracking drug containers. The captain, who has a history of substance abuse, faces multiple charges including child endangerment.
"Any time something like this happens, it is frankly devastating internally and externally to the organization," said Chief Robert Sapien regarding the drug theft by Captain Moalem.
"One is for the control of severe pain, and the other is for the control of seizures generally," explained Sapien about the drugs involved.
"We're evaluating storage procedures, distribution procedures, accountability procedures, we're evaluating new technologies that are available for securing and tracking..." said Chief Sapien.
"Feel very disappointed and somewhat, quite frankly, angry that we're at this point with someone with such responsibility," reflecting on Captain Moalem's actions.
