Patricia Wu-Murad, a 60-year-old retiree from Storrs, Connecticut, went missing on April 10, 2023, during a solo hike in Japan. After extensive search efforts yielded no results, her family confirmed her death on May 9, 2025. The confirmation provided some closure but left many unanswered questions regarding her fate. Initially, search teams from various agencies, including the American and Japanese SAR teams, the FBI, and U.S. officials, were unable to find any traces of her. Later, in September 2024, belongings belonging to Patricia, including her backpack and a shoe, were discovered near a different trail.
"On Friday, May 9, 2025, our family received confirmation that our beloved Wife, Mother, Sister, Daughter, Aunt, and Friend, Pattie Wu-Murad, is deceased."
"Despite an extensive international search effort that involved 24 American search and rescue (SAR) professionals, local Japanese SAR experts, law enforcement, U.S. Embassy officials, the FBI, and Senator Richard Blumenthal, no trace of Pattie was found in the months following her disappearance."
