Sara Heloísa Sousa and her boyfriend Luan Jackson experienced mysterious burns on their foreheads after receiving the mark of the cross during an Ash Wednesday ceremony in Brazil. The incident occurred in Carnaúba dos Dantas, where attendees reported discomfort from the ashes. Jackson suffered a significant burn after leaving the ash mark on longer, while Sousa had a smaller, but noticeable, injury. The local parish and Father Ronney Galvão stated they were unclear about the cause and extent of the injuries sustained by parishioners.
The Parish of São José issued a statement noting their preparation of the ashes was 'carried out as usual, absolutely normal, as every year.' They regretted the incident.
Father Ronney Galvão, overseeing the ceremony, commented on the mysterious burns stating, 'we still don’t know how many parishioners were injured by the strange ashes.'
Sara Heloísa Sousa described her experience, saying, 'The wind blew and it burned a lot... My boyfriend was really burned because he spent more time [with the mark] than me.'
Jackson, who received the ashes longer than Sousa, suffered a large burn in the middle of his forehead, highlighting the peculiar nature of the incident.
