Following the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, Palisades Charter's baseball team faced an unprecedented season, entirely spent on the road. With their school destroyed, the players contended with displacement and uncertainty. Despite these challenges, eight senior players were honored during a Senior Day ceremony, highlighting their perseverance. The team practiced in public parks and needed permission from rival schools for special events. The baseball season became a vital refuge for the players, with Coach Mike Voelkel describing it as a sanctuary amid tumultuous circumstances, emphasizing the importance of resilience during trials.
"I don't know where I'd be without baseball right now," said Ian Sullivan, a senior first baseman and pitcher who lost his home.
Palisades athletic director Rocky Montz introduced them individually, then paused after they had all lined up along the first-base line. 'Quite a year,' he said.
Navigating the season required uncommon resilience. Completing it was a near miracle, according to coach Mike Voelkel.
The baseball season became a much-needed constant for the players, providing what coach Mike Voelkel described as 'a sanctuary, a safe haven.'
