The Los Gatos High School cast of 'Mamma Mia!' has heavily involved students in the production process. Starting with auditions in December, the cast of nearly 40 students engaged in workshops to refine their performances. Under the direction of Tim Nielson, students have taken charge of choreography, rehearsals, and other key aspects. This year's show serves as a revival honoring the 2020 cast, who could not perform due to COVID-19 restrictions. The emphasis on teamwork and student creativity aims to create an enriched theatrical experience for all involved.
Our auditions were two or three days long, said junior Morgan Lum, who plays Ali. You bring a song about a minute long, (vocal director Maricel Riley) hears you sing.
I expressed interest in it, so (Nielson) reached out to us, and we came up with a plan. (Raj) and I divide the work because 'Mamma Mia!' is such a dance-heavy show.
We really try to emphasize teamwork and everyone doing as much as they can to make the show as good as possible.
The department chose this show partially because LGHS's 2020 cast of 'Mamma Mia!' was unable to open during the COVID-19 pandemic.
