Jerome Kunz, at 91, continues to shrimp in Galveston, Texas, embodying a lifelong passion linked to his family roots. Having started at age 10 alongside his father, he remains the oldest active shrimper in the area. When he suffered an injury, his daughter-in-law, Nikki Johnson-Kunz, joined him in 2018, documenting their experiences on social media. Her posts featuring Jerome have garnered attention, showcasing their bond and the shrimping lifestyle. As they face challenges together, Nikki finds motivation in Jerome’s resilience, reinforcing the personal and cultural significance of shrimping in their lives.
"I started doing videos of dolphins and catching shrimp and showing people what it was like when we were shrimping, and it kind of just took off," Nikki said.
"When I start to feel down, or I start to feel aches and pains, I just think, what would Pops do?"
"She's crazy about me, and I'm crazy about her," Kunz added.
Nikki shared that Pops has been an inspiration.
