Editorial: Voters should reject San Jose Unified's latest tax measure
Briefly

Despite recent approval of a property tax for construction, San Jose Unified School District officials seek renewal of a parcel tax for operations. A special election set for May 6 is seen as rushed and dysfunctional, as a grand jury previously criticized the district. With a 13% decline in student enrollment and elevated expenditures over five years, critics argue the district doesn't need additional funding. The Measure A renewal raises concerns over timing and voter turnout while emphasizing the need to prioritize operational cost reduction amid financial strains.
Over the past five fiscal years, student enrollment declined 13%, yet expenditures increased from $366 million to $492 million, a 34% rise.
Given the decline in enrollment, district officials should be looking at ways to trim costs rather than continuing the rapid escalation of expenditures.
District officials made a deliberate decision to wait until the last minute before calling an off-year election that is almost certain to have low voter turnout.
Voters should step back from the pressure tactics and examine the facts. They will see why we recommend voting no on Measure A.
