Eriberto Beltran-Arenas was sentenced to 15 years to life for second-degree murder after killing his estranged wife, Lilliam Orozco-Zelaya, in 2021. The crime occurred while their 4-year-old son and Orozco-Zelaya's roommate were present in the apartment. After a mistrial, Beltran-Arenas pleaded no contest. The judge issued a no-contact order for the son, highlighting the case's emotional and psychological impact on the child. District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe emphasized the need to address the harm to both the victim and the child in his prosecution.
"We're completely satisfied that justice was done in this case and that justice was obtained for the victim," said San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe.
"Even though he wasn't in the room, he knows what has occurred... he may not have understood them other than, you know, they were angry," Wagstaffe said.
"This situation is a tragedy for everyone involved," said Gaby Guraiib, Beltran-Arenas's defense attorney.
