In Waterbury, Connecticut, Kimberly Sullivan made a frantic 911 call after her stepson set their home ablaze, seeking urgent help while revealing the dire conditions he faced. The son, aged 32, had been locked away for over two decades in a small storage room, leading him to set the fire in a desperate escape attempt. Firefighters rescued him from the house, where he was severely malnourished at only 68 pounds. Sullivan is now facing serious charges, including assault and kidnapping due to the abuse her stepson suffered under her care.
When the fire department responded to the scene, they pulled her 32-year-old stepson from the home, who weighed a frighteningly gaunt 68 pounds.
He later told police investigators that he set the fire deliberately using hand sanitizer, printer paper and a lighter he found in his late father's hand-me-downs.
Sullivan was arrested last week and now faces charges including first-degree assault, second-degree kidnapping, first-degree unlawful restraint.
The alleged victim said he was routinely deprived of food and water—forcing him to steal food, eat out of trash cans and drink from the toilet.
