In West Virginia, a gravedigger named Matthew Fortner was arrested for digging up the casket of a baby that had been buried over 40 years ago. During his work at Baylous Cemetery, he allegedly rolled the casket down a hill, causing the skeletal remains to be thrown out. Witnesses reported the incident which resulted in his arrest and multiple charges, including disinterment of a dead body. The Cabell County Sheriff's Office noted no other graves were disturbed, calling the act isolated. Fortner's criminal history includes a previous murder conviction.
"It takes a sick individual, in my opinion, to desecrate a grave and mess with a corpse - period," Cabell County Sheriff Doug Adams said about the incident.
According to the Cabell County Sheriff's Office, no other graves were found to be disturbed at the Baylous Cemetery in Salt Rock, WV.
Matthew Fortner, 49, is charged with disinterment or displacement of a dead body, among other charges, after the disturbing act.
Officials stated that the grave of the young child was the only burial plot found to be disturbed, reinforcing the isolated nature of this incident.
