"The Contra Costa District Attorney's Office announced Thursday that the husband and wife, both 58, have been charged with one count of child abuse. The charge alleges they 'willfully and unlawfully permitted a child to be injured or placed in a situation where the child's health is endangered' over a period spanning nearly a year, from Oct. 19, 2024, through Sept. 18, 2025."
"District Attorney Diana Becton pointed to the hazards of the growing presence of electric bikes and similar vehicles on public streets in announcing the charge. 'E-bikes and e-motos are more prevalent on city streets,' Becton said. 'Now that California has new laws on the books to address public safety offenses related to e-bikes and e-motos, parents must understand the dangers these vehicles can pose to children if operated unlawfully and without proper driver education.'"
"Investigators with the Walnut Creek Police Department determined the minor had been riding the e-moto unlawfully on a public roadway and 'in an unsafe manner and at unsafe speeds' before the crash happened."
A Benicia couple, both 58, has been charged with misdemeanor child abuse after their teenage child was seriously injured in a crash while riding an electric motorcycle. The charge alleges they permitted the child to ride unlawfully over nearly a year, endangering the child's health. The incident occurred on September 18, 2025, when the minor crashed a Surron Light Bee e-moto into a minivan. Authorities emphasized the dangers of electric bikes and the need for proper education for young riders.
