S.F. Ballet to open new season with a historic world premiere commission
Briefly

San Francisco Ballet is set to premiere Ukrainian choreographer Yuri Possokhov's 'Eugene Onegin,' co-commissioned with Joffrey Ballet and featuring a new score by Ilya Demutsky. The production, based on Pushkin's novel, examines themes of idealism, regret, and the fragility of relationships within 19th-century Russian aristocracy. It will debut at the War Memorial Opera House from January 23 to February 1, 2026, and conclude Joffrey's season in Chicago from June 4-14, 2026. Possokhov, a former principal dancer and current choreographer-in-residence at San Francisco Ballet, brings decades of experience to this prolific project.
This world premiere by Yuri Possokhov, a lifelong friend and cherished Joffrey choreographer, captures our vision of bold, innovative storytelling that speaks to today's audiences while exploring deep emotional themes.
Furthering our goal of contributing new work to the repertoire and with a shared commitment to excellence, coming together to bring Yuri's vision to life has been an exciting endeavor.
