Saint John Coltrane Church runs "sound baptisms"
Briefly

His Eminence Archbishop Franzo W. King has been leading sound baptisms at the Saint John Coltrane Church in San Francisco for almost sixty years. The church, inspired by the meditative faith of John Coltrane and established in a jazz context, has evolved from listening sessions in a home to significant performances. The church seeks to blend jazz with political and religious themes, as members believe in its power as a consciousness-raising music. Celebrations such as Coltrane's 'aescencion' anniversary highlight this unique fusion of faith and music.
The church of Saint John Coltrane has become a strange San Francisco staple, a distant resonance of the summer of love. Lasting from 7 to 9 p.m., there will be 20 musicians, poets, and priests.
There were tons of jazz clubs in the Bayview and Fillmore, but after those clubs closed down, the One Mind Club was a place for the music to play after-hours.
Stephens' parents and the congregation members believed that jazz had a special political and religious place in the evolving world. The vanguard, avant-garde, civil rights and music were deeply intertwined.
King re-found faith in God around the same time that the church was started, leading to a unique blend of spiritual and musical expression.
