SF's famed Sam Wo won't close this month, but its future remains uncertain
Briefly

Longtime customers of Sam Wo will now have more time to savor the restaurant's famous barbecue pork rice noodle rolls, as it has been given an extended lease until January 26, 2025. Co-owner Steven Lee clarified that he had been misinformed about the original closure date, allowing staff and investors more time to explore options for new ownership while maintaining the beloved establishment's legacy.
Lee mentioned that they are currently reviewing numerous proposals since the announcement of Ho's retirement. He emphasized they are 'eliminating the risky offers' and are 'entertaining sales offers with or without the Sam Wo trademark,' which highlights their commitment to ensuring the restaurant's continuity under prudent circumstances.
For Sam Wo to remain open, Lee stated it must either find a suitable replacement chef or partner with a management company that can take over operations. Without these options, the iconic restaurant may face permanent closure, potentially leading to an auction of its memorabilia, which includes photographs and furniture.
As an alternative future for Sam Wo, there is a possibility to transform the restaurant into an express shop at a new location, specializing in rice noodle rolls and boba. This reflects an effort to adapt the business model while preserving its culinary essence.
