The Sunset Night Market, a popular San Francisco event stretching 10 blocks, has been canceled. In response, community organizers have created a new event, Sunset After Dark, aimed at local merchants. Set for September 26 on Irving Street, this smaller-scale event will feature food vendors, trinket sellers, and activities for children from local schools. The previous market’s cancellation was due to payment delays from the city, prompting leaders to focus on a community-driven solution to boost local business traffic.
"We saw a gap that needs to be filled, and we thought, 'What could this event look like if it was ran by merchants on the corridor?'" - Rob Aiavao.
"I can't speak for every business, but for our business, it drives a lot of, you know, traffic to an area that needs, you know, a little bit of attention." - Daniel Ramirez.
"There's definitely gonna be food vendors, there's going to be vendors selling wares, trinkets, as well as activities for kids that are going to be put on by some of the local schools." - Rob Aiavao.
"So, we're not having the gigantic extravaganza of the Sunset Night Market that was seven blocks long and 20,000 people..." - Supervisor Joel Engardio.
