The UK is on track to approve lab-grown meat, dairy, and sugar for human consumption within two years, urged by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to expedite its approval process. While UK firms have been at the forefront of this technology, they have faced delays due to current regulations. With Singapore, the US, and Israel already approving such products, the FSA plans to collaborate with tech companies and researchers to ensure safety is prioritized while speeding up regulations. Critics express concerns over potential conflicts of interest in this collaboration.
We are working very closely with the companies involved and academic groups to work together to design a regulatory structure that is good for them, but at all costs ensures the safety of these products remains as high as it possibly can.
The companies involved in helping the FSA to draw up these regulations are the ones most likely to benefit from deregulation and if this were any other type of industry, I think the situation would look very different.
