I Ranked Sushi From Five Different Grocery Stores And Was Pleasantly Surprised With The Results
Pre-packaged sushi was compared across five grocery stores in and around New York City using both objective and subjective criteria. Salmon-based rolls were selected, with four stores offering plain salmon-avocado or salmon-avocado-cucumber options and Trader Joe’s offering a spicy salmon-cucumber roll. Ratings considered overall price, pieces per package, price per piece, and weight. Subjective ratings evaluated the rice-to-salmon/vegetable ratio, rice gumminess, fish taste, and whether the roll had a heavy vinegar preservation flavor. Grocery stores add more rice vinegar than restaurants to help prevent spoilage, which can keep sushi fresher longer while creating a preserved taste. Whole Foods was treated as a baseline due to an early positive experience with sushi.
"I tried Wegman's because duh; Whole Foods and H Mart because they are nationally popular and known for having sushi; Stop & Shop because it's a regionally popular, standard grocery store; and Trader Joe's because we're all in the TJ's cult and I have a duty to the people. I compared salmon-based rolls from each place and rated each roll out of five."
"I based my rating on four objective elements: overall price, pieces per package, price per piece, and weight. I also based my rating on four subjective elements: rice/salmon/veggie ratio, rice gumminess, fish taste, and whether it had that heavy, vinegar preservation taste."
"Grocery stores add more rice vinegar to their rice than restaurants do to prevent spoilage, which keeps the sushi fresher for longer but gives it a weird, preserved taste."
"To me, Whole Foods is the OG grocery store sushi. This is actually where I tried sushi for the first time when I was seven years old (it was a cucumber roll, and it was perfect). Returning to the sushi counter just felt right, like coming home after a long trip."
