Federal court halts Calif. dairy producer operations because of listeria
Briefly

In October 2023, Rizo Lopez Foods Inc. faced a federal court injunction, requiring it to cease operations due to its involvement in a listeria outbreak that resulted in two fatalities.
The DOJ's action followed allegations from as far back as 2014 that Rizo Lopez Foods manufactured and distributed adulterated food products that led to listeriosis cases across multiple states.
Investigators linked 26 cases of listeriosis to Rizo Lopez Foods, showing that a strain of L. mono found in their cheese matched that from sickened patients, including two deaths.
The inspection by the FDA revealed not only the presence of L. mono but also unsanitary conditions. The company cannot resume production until it meets FDCA regulations.
