Chava's Restaurant in San Francisco's Mission District is closing its doors on July 15 after over two decades. Owner Elba Hernandez, who purchased the restaurant in 2002, cited economic difficulties and a loss of customers post-pandemic as reasons for the closure. The restaurant, known for its traditional Mexican dishes like enchiladas and birria, stopped serving food on June 29 and is currently selling kitchenware and decorations. Hernandez plans to take a break but hopes to reopen a new version of Chava's in the future. The surrounding area remains lively with new restaurant openings.
"The main reason is the economic situation," Hernandez stated, noting her restaurant never fully recovered from the pandemic, which forced many customers to leave San Francisco.
Chava's was well-known for platos fuertes, featuring enchiladas and chilaquiles, as well as birria served traditionally or shredded on a plate.
Elba Hernandez, who started as a server in 1995, purchased Chava's in 2002 and is now planning to take a break but hopes to reopen a new version of the restaurant in the future.
Despite Chava's closure, the Mission District remains vibrant, with new openings, including a fried chicken establishment and well-known spots like La Taqueria that continue to attract crowds.
