California's biggest worker layoff of the year so far was at SFO

Gate Gourmet is facing significant layoffs at San Francisco International Airport with 835 jobs lost due to shifts in contracts, notably with United Airlines. Required by law to inform of large layoffs, the company issued a WARN notice. However, most affected employees are expected to transition to LSG Sky Chefs, a competing catering company that plans to rehire about 800 of them under an agreement that ensures their pay and health benefits. The union representing the workers is actively involved in facilitating these job transitions.
"The union signed an agreement with Sky Chefs to rehire 800 Gate Gourmet workers and maintain their pay and health care," Waechter said.
"Many of the laid-off workers are expected to retain their jobs, but with a different employer," said spokesperson for the union.
Changes in United Airlines' catering strategy have led to adjustments in our operations," a spokesperson for Gate Gourmet told SFGATE.
Gate Gourmet must issue a WARN notice when it plans to lay off more than 50 people and notify employees and local municipalities 60 days in advance.
