Thirty-two transgender service members have filed an amicus brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to reject the Trump administration's request to reinstate the military's ban on transgender personnel. The brief highlights the severe repercussions of such a ban, including mass discharges of high-performing troops who meet all military standards. Advocates from GLAD Law and the National Center for Lesbian Rights argue that reinstating the ban would lead to an unprecedented purge and irreversibly harm many lives and careers within the military.
If this Court grants Applicants' request for extraordinary relief, thousands of transgender service members will face immediate discharge through administrative separation, a harsh process normally reserved for serious misconduct and failure to meet performance standards.
The outcome- the abrupt termination of service members who are meeting all military standards and serving honorably-would be unprecedented and un-American.
The current ban-reinstated via Executive Order 14183 in January-goes much further than the narrower 'Mattis Policy' implemented under Trump's first term.
Organizations fighting for the rights of trans people are sounding the alarm about the devastating consequences this ban would have on honorable and qualified service members.
