A collection of over 9,700 Polaroid photos has been discovered, showcasing the unique polyamorous relationship of a Houston-based throuple—Jay Hollenburger, Arthur Slaughter, and Gary Grether—nicknamed JAG. Starting in 1970, their open lifestyle was characterized by elaborate parties and an advocacy for LGBTQ+ acceptance. Their relationship lasted through significant hardships, including the deaths of both Grether and Slaughter due to AIDS. The images, chronicling their vibrant social life from 1964 to 1991, were recorded meticulously by Hollenburger, highlighting the significance of their shared experiences. They will be auctioned at the ABAA New York International Antiquarian Book Fair.
These 9,700 Polaroid photos vividly document the lives and relationships of a historic Houston throuple, showcasing their love and the vibrant culture of their time.
Living openly as a gay throuple, they believed societal acceptance of LGBTQ+ would grow through understanding, which they pursued through events like their 'Follyball' parties.
