The state of Texas has implemented a problematic policy restricting transgender individuals from changing their gender markers on driver's licenses. This policy was enacted quietly in August 2024, without public announcement, and has led to the Department of Public Safety documenting all requests made for gender updates. As of now, the reasoning for collecting this data remains undisclosed, raising concerns about privacy and discrimination against the transgender community. At least 42 inquiries were made in the last five months, many related to basic information about the process.
The Department of Public Safety has recorded every time a resident requested to update their gender on their driver's license by scanning the information on licenses.
The policy was not announced to the public, and instead revealed to state employees in an email from Sheri Gipson, the chief of Texas' Driver License Division.
