During Pride month 2025, the Trump administration announced the termination of the LGBTQ+ suicide prevention hotline, coinciding with a controversial Supreme Court ruling upholding Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for minors. San Francisco Pride Executive Director Suzanne Ford condemned the ruling, calling it a significant setback for equal protection rights similar to historical precedents. Advocates assert that despite this ruling, gender-affirming care is crucial and evidence-based, highlighting the urgent need for support among transgender youth who depend on such healthcare to lead authentic lives.
"This will be remembered as one of the worst Supreme Court rulings in history," she said in a statement. "This is the worst affront to the equal protection clause since Plessy versus Ferugson established 'separate but equal' for racial segregation."
"It was a gut punch," Ford told me over the phone later Wednesday evening. "I am just in pain for young people who have come out bravely, talked openly with family and doctors, and stood up for themselves-to suddenly know that that can all be taken away from them."
