North Carolina school district banned an LGBTQ+ trivia game. The ACLU is suing
Briefly

The ACLU of North Carolina has sued the Cleveland County Board of Education after they prohibited a trivia game about LGBTQ+ figures at Shelby High School. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court, claims that this prohibition violates students' constitutional rights, including free speech and equal access to school activities, under the argument that it goes against North Carolina's Parents' Bill of Rights. The school's decision referred to the trivia game as 'indecent,' despite its non-explicit content and focus on notable LGBTQ+ figures and characters.
It is longstanding law that students do not shed their constitutional rights at the schoolhouse gate, and school officials cannot prohibit student speech simply because they disagree with its message or find it uncomfortable.
The trivia game contained no depictions of sex, violence, or illegal activities. Instead, it asked students to identify figures such as Harvey Milk, Lady Gaga, and Ellen DeGeneres.
