The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) has rebranded to the National Center for LGBTQ Rights after nearly 50 years to better encompass its commitment to all LGBTQ individuals. Founded in 1977 by revolutionary figures Donna Hitchens and Roberta Achtenberg, the organization originally focused on the unique legal challenges faced by lesbian women, later expanding to include broader LGBTQ issues. NCLR has played a critical role in major civil rights cases, advocating for marriage equality, health care, and protections against conversion therapy for LGBTQ youth.
NCLR's original name reflected the fact that it was the first national LGBTQ organization to be founded by women, recognizing unique legal challenges faced by lesbians.
Initial goals expanded from supporting lesbian mothers to advocating for transgender parents, gay parents with HIV, and young people fighting for justice in schools.
