JEB's Luminous Portrait of Lesbian Life in 1980s America
Briefly

Lesbian artist JEB (Joan E Biren) has played a pivotal role in documenting and uplifting the lesbian experience through photography since the 1960s. As a member of the Furies Collective, she aimed to counter the male gaze and showcase authentic representations of lesbians. Her monograph, Eye to Eye: Portraits of Lesbians, published in 1979, was a landmark work that emerged from her experiences at Pride marches. Through projects like Making a Way: Lesbians Out Front, JEB has continually highlighted the resilience and visibility of the lesbian community amid socio-political challenges, especially during the AIDS crisis.
For decades, lesbians have stood at the frontlines of the LGBTQIA+, women, and civil rights movements, their contributions marginalised or erased were it not for artists like JEB.
Using these two historic events to bookend her work, JEB crafted Making a Way: Lesbians Out Front, a collection of intimate portraits and personal stories.
