Sterling Misanin, awaiting a gender-affirming hysterectomy, faced cancellation days before the procedure due to a new state law banning transition-related medical care for minors. This prohibition has extended to adult transgender patients, compounding delays and difficulties in accessing necessary procedures. Following a sweeping executive order by President Trump aimed at halting funding for institutions offering such care, several lawsuits have emerged challenging the legality of these actions. Advocates predict an increase in barriers to care for transgender individuals across the board due to political maneuvers.
"It was devastating," said Misanin, who is now the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging the state's ban.
Misanin is one of a growing number of transgender adults who say their access to gender-affirming care has become increasingly difficult due to state policies.
The order is a cruel and baseless broadside against transgender youth," the lawsuit says.
Trump signed a sweeping order titled, "Protecting Children From Chemical and Surgical Mutilation," which calls for the defunding of institutions that provide gender-affirming care.
