History-making lawyer opens up in new doc: 'My transness helped me conquer fear'
Briefly

Chase Strangio, co-director of the ACLU's LGBTQ & HIV Project, made history as the first openly trans person to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court in December 2024. He represented families opposing Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for trans youth, arguing it violates sex discrimination laws. Despite expectations leaning towards the state’s favor, Strangio remains optimistic. His experiences, including his preparations and reflections, are documented in the film "Heightened Scrutiny," showcased at the BFI Flare London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival, emphasizing the fight against increasing discrimination and injustice.
I have not really had time to reflect on the experience. Overall, though, I felt very supported by my team, and I felt as ready as I could have.
While I was actually presenting arguments before the Court, I was only thinking about the best answers to the Justices' questions.
