An Oakland man, Jamison Sol, faced a five-year struggle to change his gender marker on official DMV ID documents despite California laws supporting such changes. After transitioning in 2020 and following the necessary legal steps, he repeatedly received incorrect IDs labeled female. With assistance from a local news team, he highlighted the emotional toll this experience had on him, expressing frustration over the DMV's failures to recognize his gender identity, thus reflecting broader challenges for trans individuals in securing official documentation that aligns with their identity.
"It's really hard to convey how upsetting it was," he continued. Upsetting because after the decision to transition and the process to go about doing it, the DMV kept sending him new ID cards that said he was female.
"I got three separate IDs with a female marker on it," said Sol, who paid for each of them. "As my appearance was gradually changing to the point where to the average person I'm not female I don't look female, I don't represent female."
