Hundreds gathered at a school board meeting in Illinois to support a transgender student whose locker room access was questioned by a parent. The complaint, initiated by a parent of a cisgender daughter, claimed discomfort due to shared locker room use. The district asserted compliance with federal and state anti-discrimination laws, emphasizing that no student is forced to change in front of others. The issue has attracted federal investigation and reflects ongoing debates about transgender rights and protections in schools amidst conflicting state and federal legal precedents.
"Federal Title IX and the Illinois Human Rights Act prohibit all public school districts from discriminating on the basis of sex, including gender identity," said Superintendent Katerina Schroeder.
"We are sensitive to the privacy needs of all our middle school students and ensure that no student is required to change into a gym uniform for physical education class in front of others."
