Independent TD Marc MacSharry criticized the current community employment scheme, highlighting that Ukrainian refugees can access it after nine months of unemployment, while Irish citizens must wait one year. He argued that this policy is 'highly discriminatory' and fosters resentment among local communities.
MacSharry expressed concerns that the preferential treatment for Ukrainians could lead to growing ethnic intolerance, stating that 'this favouritism towards Ukrainian nationals only serves to fuel resentments, undermine solidarity, and nurtures ethnic intolerance in local communities'.
The Department of Social Protection explained that the expedited eligibility for Ukrainian refugees aims to promote their integration. However, MacSharry insists this disadvantaged Irish citizens and urged the minister to re-evaluate the scheme's criteria.
In a letter to Minister Heather Humphreys, MacSharry called for the integration policy to be fairer, requesting a standard qualifying period for all applicants for community employment schemes.
