Runners Use Secret Ingredient to Win N.C.A.A. Race: Olive Oil
Briefly

Brigham Young University was prepared for the N.C.A.A. Division I cross-country championships with both men's and women's teams having won the Big 12 championship. However, a major challenge facing B.Y.U. and all competitors was the cold weather condition during the race in Verona, Wisconsin, where temperatures were expected to be in the mid-to-high 30s, making it uncomfortable for runners dressed in shorts and singlets.
B.Y.U. employed an innovative yet ancient method to combat the cold: slathering their runners in olive oil. Men's coach Ed Eyestone referred to it as an 'old-school running trick.' Women's coach Diljeet Taylor confirmed the strategy, stating, 'We've done it every year if it's cold. It's a trick. You don't see a lot of people doing it.'
