Hans Troyer raced the Black Canyon 100k aggressively in 2024, running with the leaders for nearly 50 miles before dropping back and finishing tenth. He was hospitalized days later with rhabdomyolysis, requiring a 12-day recovery after severe kidney shutdown from muscle breakdown and dehydration. Troyer then faced setbacks in 2025 while chasing a Western States Golden Ticket, including contracting the flu and withdrawing, but also achieved highs such as winning the 2025 JFK 50 Mile and signing with Hoka in 2026. Troyer views his experiences as reshaping his approach and fueling continued ambition in ultrarunning.
