Gender Diverse Trail Runners and Ultrarunners Invited to Participate in Research Study
Briefly

As trail running and ultrarunning's popularity surges, inclusivity for gender-diverse athletes becomes paramount. Researcher and athlete Sophie Glasswell is advocating for the inclusion of nonbinary voices in the development of race categories. Her study targets those identifying outside binary gender categories. While some race organizers are beginning to add nonbinary categories, Glasswell emphasizes the need for genuine inclusion and representation of these athletes’ experiences to create effective and welcoming environments. Her ongoing research seeks to gather insights and challenges faced by this community to ensure their needs are recognized in future events.
It's encouraging to see that some trail/ultra event organizers are trying to build more inclusive races by adding nonbinary categories. However, the experiences and perspectives of nonbinary athletes need to be considered during the creation process.
The need to include gender-diverse people - and their lived experiences - in the conversation and planning of new race categories is essential to fully welcoming everyone.
