Christian evangelical organizations are advocating for the Trump administration to maintain funding for the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a program credited with saving millions of lives from HIV/AIDS. Although the State Department claims PEPFAR remains exempt from overseas aid cuts, it relies heavily on USAID, which has faced severe budget reductions. This has resulted in disrupted supply chains for anti-retroviral medicines in several African nations, raising fears of a resurgence of AIDS and loss of progress made. Some evangelical groups, despite political affiliations, promote PEPFAR as a vital pro-life initiative.
When Pepfar was up for reauthorization we, as World Relief, have supported it every time. We see it as really overarchingly a pro-life program in that it promotes the life-saving need for HIV treatment.
Evangelical groups warn that the delivery of anti-retroviral medicines funded by the US has all but ground to a halt in some countries, particularly in Africa.
