Nancy Pelosi, an 85-year-old representative from California, announced her retirement from political office after nearly four decades in the U.S. Congress. She served as the 52nd Speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023, becoming the first woman to hold that role. Born in Baltimore and daughter of Rep. Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., she entered politics in San Francisco in the 1960s and won a 1987 special election for California's Fifth district after Rep. Phillip Burton's death. Barack Obama praised her leadership and support of the Affordable Care Act.
