Dr. Francis S. Collins, the former head of the NIH, retired after 12 years, leaving behind a legacy as a leading figure in biomedical research and public health. In his parting statement, he thanked his colleagues and emphasized the need for strong bipartisan support for medical research, which has historically been crucial for advancements that save lives. Collins, who played a key role during the COVID-19 pandemic and led the Human Genome Project, also spoke to the current political climate impacting scientific support and employment at the NIH.
As I depart N.I.H., I want to express my gratitude and love for the men and women with whom I have worked side by side for so many years, Dr. Collins wrote. They are individuals of extraordinary intellect and integrity, selfless and hard-working, generous and compassionate.
Dr. Collins noted that when he was recruited to the institutes, and through many of the years that followed, investment in medical research was seen as a high priority and a nonpolitical bipartisan effort.
