Beginning June 2, federal retirement applications will transition to an electronic process, marking a significant modernization effort by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). This change, aimed at retiring the paper-based system, has been in development since at least 2023 and is part of a larger governmental push for IT efficiency led by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). By mid-July, OPM will cease paper submissions entirely, representing a long-anticipated shift in federal retirement processing that OPM hopes will streamline operations and improve service efficiency.
"Retirement from federal service is finally entering the digital age," said OPM Acting Director Chuck Ezell in a statement.
"Collaboration win by OPM and DOGE," read a DOGE post about the online application on X last week.
