VA Announces End of Remote Work for Thousands of Employees
Briefly

The Veterans Affairs department has mandated that eligible employees return to work in-person by the end of the month, following a directive from President Trump. Approximately 20% of its 479,000 staff currently work from home. This decision aims to level the playing field for VA staff as Acting VA Secretary Todd Hunter noted that performance and collaboration would improve if all employees are held to the same attendance standards. Exceptions will apply to certain individuals, including those with disabilities and military spouses.
The VA announced that eligible employees must work full time in VA facilities, ensuring equality among staff regarding telework policies and performance standards.
Acting VA Secretary Todd Hunter stated that treating all VA employees equally will improve performance, collaboration, and productivity across the department.
More than 20% of the VA's 479,000 employees currently work remotely, with some being exempt from returning due to disabilities or other compelling reasons.
Supervisors within 50 miles of a VA facility must also return to work, ending their telework agreements by February 24.
